World of WarCraft Patch Repo!

Posted by zEro on March 15th, 2009

Lately I fired up and installed my untouched copy of World of Warcraft bought from USA. It had been sitting in the closet due to some initial failures I incurred :P But finally it installed, I created an account and logged on.

Lo and Behold, I had to download some 3 to 5 gibs of updates just to play the game. I knew that would happen… without regrets I started downloading via the patch downloaded bundled with the game.

It uses a dynamic hash table (DHT) mechanism to keep a track of IPs sharing the same content. Much akin to the bittorrent protocol. Anyways, given to the fact that I am in Pakistan and I couldn’t really find people downloading the same patch to leech from, I was getting no where near completion of the 500+ meg download.

I knew Blizzard wouldn’t leave their fans in a lurch and searched up where I could download patches via HTTP. Thankfully there was a huge repository of reliable hosts that was serving them. It was Blizzard support themselves that listed various mirrors to these patches. Without wasting a second, I started downloading them one by one.

If you are having trouble download patches, or sit behind a firewall, I suggest you try the following link: World of Warcraft Patch Mirrors.

Good luck, have fun!

Grand Theft Auto 4: Super Addendum FAQ!

Posted by zEro on April 29th, 2008

Don’t consider yourself poor or unfortunate for not having been able to play GTA 4 yet. There are thousands like us out there that haven’t. According to Associated Press, the launch of this game could be the most lucrative franchise in gaming history! Even more than last year’s, over hyped, Halo 3.

Anyhoo, the good guys over at Kotaku have assembled a list of 40 questions that needed answering straight off, and entertaining a lot more in the comments sections of the GTA 4 FAQ:

15. Do helicopters have weapons?
Some do. Good luck hitting anything with the mini-guns! You might have better luck taking out foes with the chopper’s blades.

28. Can you run police, fireman, or taxi extra missions in GTA IV?
You can take on police missions via the LCPD computer. There’s one in every cop car. You can earn taxi missions, but they’re handled through one of your friends. We haven’t seen any fireman missions, but we have taken the fire truck out for spin (and pedestrian hose-down).

34. How much does the phone tie into gameplay?
It ties in very heavily. Niko will use it to make and receive calls, remind him of appointments, take pictures, call cabs, phone in favors, and more. Need a cop car? Call 911, wait for the LCPD, then carjack it. The cell phone is also your entry point for accessing multiplayer games.

Unboxing GTA 4!

Posted by zEro on April 28th, 2008

Someone really lucky at Kotaku received his Grand Theft Auto 4 today and does us all a noble favor of recording it’s unboxing on a few still. What I made out of these is that it has a nifty box with a handle on top, and a few cool merchandise (like a key chain and a mat kinda thing?) and a few other goodies. Can’t wait for it to come on PC. Go enjoy the gallery here!

When ‘home alone’ ask Macaulay and Mila!

Posted by zEro on April 27th, 2008

Movies are going down. The film industry is facing a slow down thanks to a surging gaming market and industry, plus the recent writer’s strike, etc. Apart from gadgets, web 2.0 web apps, and new media, the next hip thing is gaming. Ask these celebrities who have been interviewed by online e-Zine ‘Complex‘ who quized the two stars about World of WarCraft.

World of WarCraft is Blizzard’s massively popular massively multiplayer online role playing game. Which literally defines it’s genre, MMORPG. It is a paid subscription game that is extremely popular all over the world, especially North America.

Macaulay Culkin is famous for his Home Alone movies series, a cute face, and drug abuse. Mila Kunis is a more stable yet equally intelligent That 70’s Show (Wikipedia) super babe.

Surprisingly Mila and Macaulay were amazingly well informed about the game and was able to name famous sub-culture phenomenon that people on the fringe of the WoW world barely know. They both scored an awesome 5.8 on the quiz.

According to Mila, the nerdiest thing people can do on World of WarCraft, is “playing it”. She was also name the infamous name that was popularized by YouTube raid video.

Massively Multiplayer Call Of Duty in the pipeline ?!

Posted by atof on March 5th, 2008

It seems that Activision wants to compete in the Million Dollar Market of MMO’s such as Warcraft! And the game that they want to explore is the Game of the Year: Call Of Duty! Read on for more from Kotaku:

“The head cheese at Activision, Bobby Kotick, recently made headlines for his assertion that, in order to compete properly with World of Warcraft, publishers may need to invest nearly a billion dollars in such a venture. Fortunately for Kotick and crew, they now have access to the big brains at Blizzard and Vivendi, a group of folks who know quite a bit about the MMO business. How then, can Activision exploit its biggest earners into even bigger financial monsters?

Google Maps API + World of WarCraft: Google Maps for WoW!

Posted by zEro on March 2nd, 2008

2008-03-02_mapwowcom-world-of-warcraft-maps_mapwowcom.pngYes! This is possibly the most innovative use of he Google Map’s API and the World of WarCraft, they have mashed up the both and come out with MapWoW. Just the way you zoomed in and out of the normal Google Maps, you can do the same with this map; Zoom in and out, etc. You can even select to view faction travel paths, herb growth, ore placement and many things more.

Earlier there was a blog about Azeroth being written at Metroblogging that is an example of projects done around WoW.

Terrorists might be playing Massively Multiplayer Online games?

Posted by zEro on February 28th, 2008

Just like Blizzard Entertainment of the World of WarCraft fame, I too have no comments on this.

Over the last few years, “virtual worlds” such as Second Life and other role-playing games have become home to millions of computer-generated personas known as avatars. By directing their avatars, people can take on alternate personalities, socialize, explore and earn and spend money across uncharted online landscapes.

Nascent economies have sprung to life in these 3-D worlds, complete with currency, banks and shopping malls. Corporations and government agencies have opened animated virtual offices, and a growing number of organizations hold meetings where avatars gather and converse in newly minted conference centers.

Intelligence officials who have examined these systems say they’re convinced that the qualities that many computer users find so attractive about virtual worlds — including anonymity, global access and the expanded ability to make financial transfers outside normal channels — have turned them into seedbeds for transnational threats. What they intend to do,

The project will involve sifting through vast amounts of data, looking for suspicious behavior and actions. The Intelligence Community wants to target MMOs because they typically fall outside the purview of study. The spying project would only use publicly available data. The findings of the endeavor would not be classified.

Data mining is the process of going through large amounts of information for specific relevant information. This is a process that has long been used in the business industry for product and market research. The government plans to use these same techniques to root out terrorist messages in online content. Guild Wars Sells 5 Million, still no subscription fee

Posted by zEro on February 27th, 2008

guild_wars_character_selection_2_screenshot.jpgAmazing how a Massively Mulitplayer Online RPG could sustain itself and keep growing without any subscription fee. Latest news releases announce that Guild Wars has gone over 5 million units sold. Thats a huge number!

Developed by NCsoft and ArenaNet, Guild Wars is MMO that has had three expansion packs released already since April 2005, when it was first released. Receiving a great amount of appreciation from the community and critics, it was named the best game in 2006 by a number of magazines.

Guild Wars’ servers are run by ArenaNet and they have no subscription fee to them, unlike Blizzard’s World of WarCraft. Not surprisingly, the designer behind the server network architecture had formerly worked on Battle.net in the same capacity.
