WCG 2008: Day 3 Results - Single Elimination Stage
The Warcraft tournament on Day 3 of WCG saw some really amazing games. The intensity of the games played was even greater since it was a knock-out phase. It was pretty obvious who would advance from the round of top 16 to the quarter-finals, with the exception of Like vs ToD, where with the use of some risky tower pushes ToD was able to defeat Like and moved on to face Grubby in the quarter-finals.
Having used his surprise tactic against Like already, ToD admitted that the King of Orcs was going to be hard to take down in an interview with SK-Gaming. That is what exactly happened, and Grubby came on top after three close games. Another quarter-final match that generated much interest was Moon vs TeD. Moon recovered from being down 0-1 in map score, taking the series with a score of 2-1.
The semi-finals saw Moon winning over Happy and Grubby over HoT. This set the stage for the most anticipated and THE greatest WCG final ever: MYM]Moon vs MYM]Grubby. The final is going to be played today, at 13:00 CET and will be streamed live on ESL TV, and WCG’s official stream. Let’s hope the streams are able to handle the load of the amount of expected spectators, which could be a record high!
WCG 2008: Day 2 Results
The second day of World Cyber Games 2008 marks the end of the group stage for all titles part of the event. Pakistan’s games for CS, FIFA and CnC3 have been completed and the results were not bad at all!
FIFA player ‘SmoothCriminal’ had a very impressive run in his group. With a total of four games that he had to play, he was up 2-0 initially. I personally thought he was going to qualify from his group since he was leading the points table at that time. He lost the next two games, however, due to which he was tied for second place. ‘Orchi’ from Bangladesh managed to win the tie-breaker between them and qualified from the group with SmoothCriminal finishing third. (EDIT: There was no tie-breaker between them. In fact second place was awarded directly to the winner of their head to head group match - Orchi).
Team ‘incredibles’ who are representing Pakistan for Counter-Strike went 1-4 in their group with their win being against Simplex. Their losses include a very close game against ’Assassin List’ from UAE.
For CnC 3, ‘Pantera’ was able to take two maps out of six, finishing 2-4 overall in his group.
WC3L Season XIV Update
Warcraft’s most prestigious league, the WC3L, is heading towards the end of its current season. With a total of 11 playdays*, playday 10 is set to commence today with WE squaring off against SK.
When the season started, anyone could tell that by the end MYM, mTw, SK, fnatic and WE would be leading the pack. Infact, the competition between these 5 teams is so tight that only 3 points currently separate 1st place (MYM) from the 5th (mTw).

WCG Pakistan finally announced!
While the national qualifiers for World Cyber Games 2008 have already been completed in most countries over the world, they just started here in Pakistan. After much confusion over the past few weeks regarding this year’s WCG, Wateen Telecom finally announced last week that it will be organising the qualifiers in Pakistan. Winners will get a chance to represent Pakistan at the WCG grand finals to be held in Cologne, Germany later this year.
Regional qualifiers were conducted at certain gaming cafes in 8 cities over the last week. The six titles that the organisers included are:
- Counter-Strike 1.6
- Warcraft III
- Command & Conquer 3
- FIFA ‘08
- Dota (Pakistan only)
- CoD 4 (Pakistan only)
According to Wateen the national finals will be held in Lahore on the 6-7th of October, where the winners of the regional qualifiers will compete against each other.
More information regarding dates and venues can be found at games.wateen.com/wcg. If you want to find out more about the WCG grand final itself, visit www.worldcybergames.com.
This year’s edition of WCG Pakistan has received heavy criticism because it was poorly publicised and is being held way too late. Other than that, the dates for the national final in Lahore were recently changed and the venue still hasn’t been decided! These are things that should be taken care of before the event is announced so that participants can plan ahead. Some people are even speculating that the winners might not be able to attend the grand final because there won’t be enough time for visas to be issued. For now we can just hope that everything goes as planned and not too many gamers are disappointed.
ESWC 2008 Grand Finals

The sixth version of the Electronic Sports World Cup is right around the corner, being held next week between 25-27th of August. This year’s grand finals will take place in San Jose, California and will include competitions for Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike Women, Quake III, Trackmania Nations, DotA and Warcraft III. The event boasts an impressive total prize purse of $200,000, which is to be split amongst the top3 contestants for each game. A detailed prize money breakdown can be found here.
The list of participants and pools for each game have already been announced (except for Trackmania) and can be found by clicking the following links:
GROUP STAGE 1: Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike Women, Quake III, DotA, Warcraft III.
Live results and updates can be found on their website throughout the event. There will also be a live video stream for main stage matches which can be viewed here. Live games can also be viewed on clients such as Waaagh!tv, GarenaTV, HLTV and TMTV.
This ought to be a great event so make sure you follow it!
A List of WarCraft 3 Leagues
A major portion of the replays that are uploaded on well known warcraft sites (WCReplays, Replays.net etc) are produced by top level league games such as the WC3L or NGL. There is no doubt that these two leagues are the top most in every aspect… be it prize money, skill level, organisation or the fact that both have offline finals every season. However, there is a lot more activity in the warcraft scene and many of us are not aware of it.
Here is a list along with a small description of other not so well known European and American leagues. I’ll try my best to order them in decreasing skill order as accurately as possible.
1. WPL - ‘Warcraft Premier League’
WPL is a branch of ‘The Gaming League’ (TGL) with well known teams such as PGS, wicked, srs and fnatic that take part in it. I would rate it above NGL-two even.
2. WCIP - ‘Wc3 International Premiership’
The WCIP is organised by ‘Electronic Sports League’ (which also organises WC3L) and is highly rated among all the semi-pro leagues.
3. WGS - ‘World Gaming Series’
The WGS is responsible for organising two warcraft leagues, namely ‘The Frozen League’ (TFL) and ‘World Gaming League’ (WGL). TFL works on the WC3L format (five independent games) whereas the WGL is NGL format (winner to stay). These two leagues are almost as good as WCIP, if not better.
4. WHL - ‘Warcraft Heroes League’
WHL is only into its third season and has improved massively since when it started. Many top american teams and some decent european teams participate in this league.
WCL has been around for a while now. The organisers faced some problems recently and there were some chances of it being closed down, but thankfully it’s still running, currently having qualifiers for their next season.
Other respectable leagues that fall at the bottom of this list include:
7. W3AL - ‘Warcraft III Americas League’
8. ICL/ICE - ‘Infernal Cry League’
I’ve been following these leagues a lot more than i used to. While the skill level is definitely not what one might be used to seeing in golden crowned replays from replays.net, this level of gaming also helps us improve. The reason being that these players make mistakes that pros only rarely would, from which we could learn.
Replays from these leagues can be found on their websites.
Replay Analysis - hoorai.DieSeL vs DeltaBenQapm
The international WarCraft III scene is arguably at its peak right now. There are so many leagues and tournaments taking place simultaneously that it is now almost impossible to follow each and every one of them. With tournaments like these, the number of quality replays that are produced on a daily basis are also on an all-time high.
Lately, there has been a growing trend of solo online tournaments… a trend set by incup. While incup itself is not active anymore, we have seen new tournaments as such, which include ZOTAC cup, Excello cup (Euro, America and Asia) and WHL cup just to name a few. The replay that I will cover today is a semi-final from ZOTAC #22 between Canadian Undead “apm” and Bulgarian Night Elf “DieSeL”.
Replay Analysis - MYM]Grubby vs mouz.ToD
Hello people! Today I bring to you a review of a game played just a few days back between former team mates, and now rivals, Grubby and ToD. This game took place at the Extreme Masters finals in the first round of the upper bracket.
Grubby, also known as the King of Orcs hails from the Netherlands and plays for team Meet Your Makers.
ToD on the other hand is a French Human player representing team mousesports. Both of them are considered top world class players and have a bunch of notable accomplishments.
