In-Game Advertisment: SC2 won’t have!
While advertisements have become a boon for the internet community over the years, the fact they have been realized as a method of self sustaining projects is taking roots fast. Even in the gaming industry producers and developers are trying to harness sponsorship and advertisement money to reduce tariffs and improve on their products.
When the internet was taking over the world, things like pop ups and flashy ads were becoming an eye-sore for the user, yet a method to earn big bucks for websites. Soon it became known that bad website or product design didn’t take care of user friendliness and how the advertisements appeared.
Competitive gaming is taking hold in communities as a form of a spectator sport very fast. In Korea it already is an big sponsorship money is thrown into tournaments and onto players, because people like them, and it makes marketing sense. Same is the case with Europe and now gradually taking over the Americas.
Blizzard in their recent press-release addressed concerns about in-game advertisements. Advertisements in the gaming industry are not a major concern. But rather a welcomed part of it, since it generates free-revenue. One way of doing that is my modifying maps and stages to fit in company or product logos. Blizzard’s up coming title StarCraft 2 will NOT have in-game advertisements!
The sole reason for this as we understand is that it is not the in-game advertisement that is keeping a good amount of sponsor money coming in, rather the advertisements appearing on the free online gaming service Battle.net.
I for one am totally for in game advertisements since they provide a way of reaching quite a lot of people, and the specification of target audience is very easy. Plus, if the game is free for me through these advertisements, what could be better?
Currently only a number of games use in-game advertisements as a method of revenue generation, while a number of game developers have expressed intent to use this medium to make their products even more competitive. In-game Advertisement is however a well established industry. With the numbers of people playing World of Warcraft today, it makes perfect business sense.
