At Microsoft’s GDC (Game Developers Conference) keynote, Epic technical director and CEO Tim Sweeney showed off the updated Unreal Engine 3 in a graphics buzzword-filled presentation. The new engine will power the upcoming Gears of War 2 and promises great things like hundreds of bad guys on the screen, dynamic shadows and better character lighting.

In the video following the link, you can also see more realistic water rendering as characters shoot and jump into puddles and pools. Tim got the crowd laughing when started shooting a huge cube of meat to demonstrate the new elastic and viscous object properties

    Nice!

I am a bit cynical about Microsoft’s benevolence at holding the GDC. I know it’s a good thing and all but it also gets other companies to come and talk about ‘ideas of their own.’ Which gives MS a lot more than they already have.

I think that is what the purpose of the conference is then. To gauge where the industry is heading. Hmmm… I wanna go!

I’m really surprised to see Japanese developers embracing the Unreal 3 engine. Frame City Killer uses it if I’m not mistaken. I think there’s at least one more. I just think it’s a very big indicator of cost this generation, as Japanese developers typically design a new engine for every game they create.
